Skill Assessment

A skills assessment is essential for skilled migration and employer-sponsored visas in Australia. It confirms that your qualifications, experience, and skills meet Australian standards in your nominated occupation. Better Choice Migration assists with ACS, CPA/IPA, TRA, VETASSESS, ANMAC/AHPRA, ACWA, Engineers Australia, and more. A successful skills assessment is mandatory for many visa subclasses.

Who Needs a Skills Assessment?

  • Skilled migration visa applicants (e.g., Subclass 189, 190, 491)
  • Employer-sponsored visa applicants (e.g., Subclass 482, 186)
  • Graduates applying for Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)
  • Professionals & tradespeople seeking Australian work recognition

Check which authority assesses your occupation before applying.

Skills Assessment for Trade Occupations

If you have completed a trade qualification, follow these steps:

Step 1 – Provisional Skills Assessment (PSA)

TRA verifies:

  • Your identity & qualifications
  • Work experience in your nominated occupation
  • Employment history (minimum 360 hours of paid work or vocational placement)

A successful PSA outcome allows you to apply for a Subclass 485 visa.

Step 2 – Job Ready Employment (JRE)

  • Find employment in your nominated occupation
  • Register for JRE with TRA
  • Work a minimum of 1,725 paid hours over 12 months

You can claim up to 3 months of prior employment before applying.

Step 3 – Job Ready Workplace Assessment (JRWA)

  • Eligible after completing 863 work hours over 6 months
  • Requires submission of payslips, invoices & bank statements

Step 4 – Job Ready Final Assessment (JRFA)

  • Verifies completion of 1,725 work hours over 12 months
  • Leads to a full skills assessment approval
